about

iydtih is the stunning debut album from Japanese sound artist Rei Nakatani.

Rei's trademark sense of spatial awareness and industrial minimalism are impossible to ignore, and draws you in with repeated listens. Each of the 11 tracks on iydtih showcase a sonic discipline in a style all his own, using non-standard sounds that break away from the ubiquity of many of his electronic contemporaries.

Rei has applied his skills as a professional sound designer in order to produce a dazzling range of styles, from warm, sound bath ambient, to excursions in clicking, pulsating IDM electronica, to brutalist, razor sharp techno.

When interviewed about the album, Rei talks about 'widening the range of tolerance' in his approach to music, which has led him to embrace techniques and approach to sound design that, in isolation, should not necessarily work, but once assembled together, work incredibly well.

Essentially, iydtih demands your full concentration, and will reward you with a mix of precise, genre-fluid sound sculptures that are complex in their simplicity.

REALLY wish I'd subscribed sooner to be able to enjoy this on vinyl! Curious the artist cited 12 Monkeys and not La Jetee as one of the key inspirations. For me, this has a more somber, introspective and timeless feel more akin to La Jetee than 12 Monkeys (though I also am a big fan of Terry Gilliam). Gorgeous music and you get the bonus of a list of excellent movies to enjoy (another note to the artist: Time Crimes is also a good film to watch). Now to somehow procure a vinyl copy...
